Virginia Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) held their annual State Leadership and Recognition Conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on April 16 - 19 , 2015. The theme of the conference was “SOAR”. FCCLA members from across the state came to compete, gain leadership skills, and learn from other members. Richlands High School FCCLA had a freshman member elected to one of eight state officer positions. Lexie Bales is the new state FCCLA Vice President of Programs. She she started her year of duties in Washington DC, on July 3-10,2015. Lexie is the daughter of Becky Bales and sister of Ally Bales of Claypool Hill, Virginia. Her adviser is Mrs. Beth Goforth, Richlands High School and former adviser Mrs. Pat Deel, Richlands Middle School. Support for RHS FCCLA has been given by Mr. George Brown, CTE/Secondary Education Supervisor, Mrs. Kim Ringstaff, Mrs. Sarah Taylor Principal and Assistant-Principal
As well as a new state officer, Richlands High School FCCLA accomplished many individual student and state awards. Lexie Bales received a Power of One medal for completion of five different units. Under Lexie’s leadership as president of RHS FCCLA, the chapter gained an Outstanding Platinum chapter award. This was the first year for the platinum level award. The chapter also gained seven national program awards for projects done in the local school. One of the seven national awards, National Leadership in Action (formally Community Service) was one of the strongest projects which helped the Good Samaritan Food Pantry. Along with these awards, the chapter also won the Susan Glasscock award given to only five chapters across the state.
