Tazewell, VA—At the January meeting of the Tazewell County School Board, Irene Mullins was named chair for the 2025 calendar year, and Erik Robinson was named vice chair. The board unanimously supported both appointments by acclamation.
Mullins taught and was an administrator in Tazewell County Public Schools for 33 years. She was born and grew up in Tennessee moving to Tazewell during her high school years and graduated from Tazewell High School.
Mrs. Mullins received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia at Wise. She received her first master's degree and administrative certification from Salem University. Mullins received her second master's degree from Radford University as a Reading Specialist. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mullins worked at Southwest Virginia Community College, Tazewell Office for Youth and Spouse Abuse, Jno. McCall Coal Company Inc., and Acme Markets, Inc.Mullins has also taught college-level classes for Southwest Virginia Community College, Virginia Intermont College, Roanoke Business College, and Bluefield State University.
Upon retirement from Tazewell County Public Schools, Mullins ran for the seat on the school board in the Southern District and has served on the school board for 7 years. Mullins has served as both chair and vice chair previously during her school board tenure. She has also served as Region Chair for the Virginia School Board Association.
Mullins wants to see Tazewell County Public Schools achieve and offer the best education possible for our students. “Tazewell County has awesome parents and kids. We are blessed with many of the best and most dedicated teachers, directors, principals, and school system leaders in the state. We all want the best for all of our students in Tazewell County,” said Mullins.
Robinson, who will serve as vice chair, has previously served as Chair on the Tazewell Co School Board. Robinson has worked with children and families for the past 30 years in many different capacities including with Roanoke City Department of Social Services, VA Baptist Children’s Home, Second Chance Learning Center, and Intercept Health. He is currently the Director of Business Development for HopeTree Family Services.
Other school board members include Mrs. Chris Moir, Mrs. Donna Whittington, and Mr. David Woodard. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the school board will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025. The closed session will begin at 5 p.m. and the regular session will begin at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Student Center at Tazewell County Career and Technical Center.
